SANGSAD BHABAN, June 18, 2026 (BSS) – Lawmakers today said the proposed budget for fiscal year 2026-27 (FY27) will help to reduce discrimination between the rich and poor in the country.
Taking part in the general discussion on the national budget at the Jatiya Sangsad here, the lawmakers said the government is firm to stand beside the marginal people with this proposed budget.
On June 11 Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury unveiled a Taka 9.38 trillion national budget for FY27 setting the GDP growth target at 6.5 percent aiming to rebound from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing fiscal year.
Praising the proposed budget, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman said the proposed budget has been placed for protecting the interest of the poor, middle class and marginal people.
The proposed budget has been outlined in line with the plan announced by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Terming the proposed budget as ‘well thinking’, the law minister said although the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) always used to criticize the budget but distinguished CPD fellow Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya who also a macro-economist and public policy analyst, has described the proposed budget as a well thinking budget.
In the past, the minister said people usually came to street to protest the budget saying that the budget has been placed to kill the poor but now the budget has been placed to protect the poor people.
The law minister said this proposed budget will help the government to establish good governance, justice, human rights and democracy. With the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said the country will advance through facing the anarchism and fundamentalism.
Referring to the siphoned off US$234 billion during the fascist regime, Asaduzzaman said the fascist regime has siphoned off US$ 234 billion from the country and built ‘begum para’ abroad but the opposition in the parliament remained silence about it.
Amid the meltdown of the world economy, ruling party lawmaker Md Showkatul Islam of Moulvibazar-2 said the main strength of the budget is a balanced distribution and proposed tax free income limit of Taka 3.75 lakh which would bring relief to the lower income and middle class people.
Prosperity in agriculture, health safety and development of the grassroots people through the local government are the main strengthen of the proposed budget he said, adding that this budget has been skillfully crafted for building a prosperous Bangladesh.
The implementation of the budget will help to establish the country toward a strong economy through overcoming the existing economic deadlock situation, said ruling party lawmaker Ershad Ullah from Chattogram-8.
Participating in the budget discussion, independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana of Brahmanbaria-2 said Taka 2,43,000 crore is the neat deficit in the budget and the proposed budget has set a target to earn revenue of Taka 6,95,000 crore and it will increase the overall budget deficit.
Criticizing the proposed budget, opposition Jamaat-e Islami lawmaker Azizur Rahman from Jashore-1 said the proposed budget is around 38 percent more than the previous budget and it is the vital question how this budget will be implemented.
