Proposed budget emphasis on people’s welfare, not on mega projects: MPs

SANGSAD BHABAN, June 17, 2026 (BSS) – Lawmakers today said the proposed budget for 2026-27 fiscal has not emphasized on the mega projects but concentrates on people’s welfare.

Taking part in the general discussion on the national budget at the Jatiya Sangsad here, the MPs  said the proposed budget has ensured the welfare and social safety of the common people instead of concentrating on implementing mega projects.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on June 11 unveiled a Taka 9.38 trillion national budget for 2026-27 setting the GDP growth target at 6.5 percent aiming to rebound from the provisional 4.14 percent growth recorded in the outgoing fiscal year (FY26). 

Praising the proposed budget, M Abdul Mannan of Brahmanbaria-5 said the proposed budget has taken initiative to raise allocation for education, health, social safety and containing inflation and it will play an important role to form a welfare state.

The budget also has taken initiative for developing the livelihood of the lower and middle class people, transforming the youths as skilled manpower and strengthening the rural economy which is praiseworthy, said the lawmaker.

In the past, the prices of the essentials were raised after announcement of the budget, but now the prices of the essentials did not increase even after announcement of the budget led by the Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and brought relief to the people of all strata, he told the parliament.

Even the proposed budget will make easier the implementation of the electoral manifestoes of the government, he said.

Quoting a report of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), another ruling party lawmaker (women seat-31) Sanjida Yasmeen said the food price inflation is creating impact on the people’s livelihood while raising allocations of age old allowance, widow allowance and social safety net would make the life easier of the lower income people.

Praising the health sector allocation, opposition lawmaker Shamsunnahar Begum (women seat-43) said the government in the proposed budget has allocated Taka 69,409 crore for the health sector which is almost double compare to the outgoing fiscal and hopeful that this enhanced allocation will bring a significant change in the sector.

Expressing regret about the budget announced in the last 17 years, another BNP lawmaker Munshi Rafiqul Alam of Feni-1 said the proposed budget will more reinforce the economy of the country while the previous fascist government announced the budget for looting. 

Sharply criticizing the proposed budget, opposition lawmaker Mizanur Rahman of Chapainawabganj-2 said ruling BNP criticized the rising cost of living before coming to power but after coming to power they [BNP] have raised fuel price repeatedly.
