SANGSAD BHABAN, June 15, 2026 (BSS) – The government has taken initiatives to generate environmental friendly solar power by utilizing unused land and vacant rooftops of Bangladesh Railway facilities across the country, Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam told Parliament today.
Replying to a starred tabled question from ruling party lawmaker Nipun Roy Chowdhury (women seat-11), the minister said the ministry has already begun efforts to install solar power systems on railway properties under a model aimed at increasing the railway’s own revenue.
“Initiatives have been taken to generate solar electricity by utilizing Bangladesh Railway’s unused land and rooftops,” Rabiul Alam said.
He informed the House that the programme is being implemented following the OPEX (Operation Expenditure) model outlined in the Net Metering Guideline-2025, issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on December 9, 2025.
“Under this model, investments will be invited from private investors,” he said.
The minister said that in the first phase, solar installations will be set up on the vacant rooftops of the railway stations at Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram and Sylhet, as well as on the rooftops of railway office buildings in Dhaka.
“In the first phase, initiatives have been taken to install solar systems on the vacant rooftops of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram and Sylhet railway stations and on vacant rooftops of office buildings in Dhaka,” he added.
He further noted that the programme would be expanded gradually to other railway facilities across the country.
“The activities will be brought under this programme in other locations in phases,” the minister told Parliament.
