SANGSAD BHABAN, June 11, 2026 (BSS) - Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today said the government aims to transform Bangladesh into a trillion-dollar economy by 2034 through a fair, transparent and technology-driven tax system that supports investment and economic growth.
Placing the proposed national budget of about Taka 9.38 lakh crore for FY2026-27 at Jatiya Sangsad (JS), he outlined the government's medium- and long-term revenue goals, including raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 10 percent in the medium term and further increasing it to 15 percent by 2035.
The finance minister said achieving these targets would require a modern revenue system that is business-friendly, predictable and supported by advanced technology.
Such a system, he noted, would help accelerate the cycle of investment, production, employment, consumption and tax collection, thereby strengthening the country's economic foundation.
Khosru said the government is committed to building a modern and transparent tax administration through greater computerization and by restoring public confidence in the tax system.
The proposed budget places special emphasis on simplifying tax procedures, eliminating unnecessary regulations and making it easier to conduct business while reducing compliance burdens on taxpayers, he added.
According to the finance minister, reforms in tax administration are designed not only to enhance revenue collection but also to create a more conducive environment for private-sector growth, investment expansion and job creation, which are essential for sustaining Bangladesh's long-term economic development goals.
