SANGSAD BHABAN, April 30, 2026 (BSS) - The first session of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad was prorogued today after 25 sittings, which began on March 12.
The first session of the current Jatiya Sangsad in 2026 was convened following the formation of the new government led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) through the general election held on February 12.
Before reading out the prorogation order of the President, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram said, "The cooperation of both ruling and opposition lawmakers encouraged me to run the session of parliament, and I hope this cooperation will continue in the future."
Jatiya Sangsad Leader Prime Minister Tarique Rahman delivered his valedictory speech at the closing of the session. Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, the parliament unanimously endorsed a general discussion on the thanksgiving motion on the President's speech, which was moved by ruling party Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, as President Mohammed Shahabuddin addressed the parliament at the outset of the session on March 12.
The discussion lasted for 38 hours. Lawmakers from both the ruling BNP and the opposition Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami actively participated in the discussion.
A total of 94 out of 133 ordinances were passed by Parliament during the first session, including two in the closing sitting.
Along with the enactment of laws, five parliamentary standing committees and two special committees were also formed during the session.
A total of 16 notices were received under section 62, of which two were discussed. One notice out of nine under section 68 was also discussed.
Discussion was held on 38 notices received under section 71. Two-minute speeches were made 207 times under section 71 (Ka), while one out of 14 notices under section 164 was sent to the special committee on special privilege.
Two special committees were also formed under section 266 of the Rules of Procedure.
A total of 93 questions were received, including 35 for the Prime Minister's question-and-answer session. For other ministers, 2,509 questions were received, of which 1,778 were answered by different ministries during the session.
Before reading out the prorogation order, the Speaker thanked all MPs from both treasury and opposition benches. He also thanked officials, journalists, law enforcement agencies, and Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel for their services in smoothly conducting the session.
