People mandate BNP to bring future reform: MPs

SANGSAD BHABAN, April 21, 2026 (BSS) – Treasury bench lawmakers today said the people have voted the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to power aiming to bring future reform of the country.

BNP got huge mandate in the 13th national parliament election to bring necessary reforms in the country, they said.

The treasury bench lawmakers said this while taking part in the discussion on thanks giving motion of the President’s speech in the House with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal in the chair.

“All the major political and economic reforms in the country have been brought by the BNP. Now, the BNP has formed the government with two-third majority to bring future reform”, said BNP lawmaker Mainul Islam Khan of Manikganj-2.

The government led by BNP had introduced value added tax (VAT) replacing the previous excise duty on domestically produced goods and services and sales tax at the import stage on July in 1991, he said.

“Even the parliamentary system of government was formally restored in 1991 through the 12th Amendment, establishing the current Westminster-style parliamentary system by the BNP led by former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia,” he added.

The first session of the 13th parliament began on 12 March with President Mohammed Shahabuddin delivering his address.
The Business Advisory Committee later fixed 50 hours for discussion on the President’s speech. Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam moved the motion of thanks on the president’s address which was seconded by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu.

Protesting anti-reformist propaganda against BNP, Farhad Hossain Azad of Panchagarh-2 said a certain quarter is trying to labeling BNP as anti-reformist although the ruling BNP is committed to bring a reform in line with the July charter.

Taking part in the discussion, BNP lawmaker Esrat Sultana Elen Bhutto said no development works took place in her constituency in the last 17th years due to political vengeance.
