SANGSAD BHABAN, April 7, 2026 (BSS) - Lawmakers today said the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) participated in three historically vital events including the July uprising while other political parties broadly had no such involvement.

Besides the War of Independence in 1971, the ruling BNP were involved in anti-authoritarian movement in 1990 and anti-fascist revolution in 2024 while Awami League and opposition in 13th parliament Jamaat-e-Islami had no example of such involvement.

The lawmakers made the remarks while participating in the discussion on thanks giving motion on the President’s speech held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban here with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair.

Even the lawmakers during the discussion also highlighted various issues including infrastructural needs in their respective areas alongside the implementation of the election manifestoes of the present BNP government.

The first session of the 13th parliament began on March 12 with President Mohammed Shahabuddin delivering address.

The Business Advisory Committee later fixed 50 hours for discussion on the speech. Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam moved the motion of thanks on the President’s address, which was seconded by Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu.

Taking part in the discussion today, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Mir Shahe Alam said no other political parties except BNP have such participation in these three major national events in the country. 

Criticizing the opposition, the state minister also lawmaker from Bogura-2 said the opposition is trying to undermine the War of Independence through establishing the July movement, stating that it is not fair and the achievement of the independence through the liberation war is the highest achievement of the nation.

He urged the opposition to support the government aiming to uplift the country toward better position in future under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Appreciating the incumbent President, another BNP lawmaker M Jalaluddin  from Chandpur-2 said President M Shahbuddin deserves appreciation as he admitted in his speech in the parliament that the ousted fascist regime used the police forces against the people and they [the regime] also damaged the image of the Election Commission through organizing three ‘farce’ elections in the last sixteen years.

Regarding the popularity of BNP, treasury bench lawmaker Rafiqul Islam Jamal of Jhalokhati-1 said people love BNP very much and BNP came to power every time in every neutral elections held in the country.

He urged the government to establish a modern hospital at Kathalia in his constituency and a 100-bed hospital at Rajapur for enhancing modern health care facilities in his electoral area.

Participating in the discussion, independent lawmaker Rumeen Farhana from Brahmanbaria-2 said the July uprising was not only a movement for changing the government but it was held for building a discrimination free Bangladesh.

She urged the government to bring back the huge siphoned money for recovering the fragile economy of the country.

Opposition lawmaker Salahuddin Ayubi from Gazipur-4 called upon the government to install gas line in Kapasia for developing the area as an industrial zone.

Other BNP lawmakers M Kamruzzaman from Munshiganj-3, Abu Sayeed Chand from Rajshahi-6,Professor Nazrul Islam from Rajshahi-5, SA Jinnah Kabir from Manikganj-1, M Abdus Salam from Thakurgaon-2, Abul Kalam from Cumilla-9, opposition lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam from Satkhira-4, Khelafat Majlish lawmaker Abul Hasan from Sylhet-5 and independent lawmaker M Abdul Hannan from Chandpur-4, also took part in the discussion.

The lawmakers also paid rich tribute to BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, uncompromising leader and three-time Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and also to the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives during the War of Independence in 1971 and the July uprising in 2024.
