SUNAMGANJ, Feb 9, 2026 (BSS) – BNP nominated candidate for Sunamganj-1 constituency Kamruzzaman Kamrul has vowed to develop the haor-based area into an industrial and tourism hub, if elected in the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad polls.

In an exclusive interview with BSS ahead of the polls, Kamrul said his priority would be creating employment opportunities for people of the haor region and establishing fair demands for workers.

He also pledged to implement BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman’s 31-point reform agenda.
The Sunamganj-1 constituency comprises Tahirpur, Jamalganj, Dharmapasha and Madhyanagar upazilas.

Kamrul, a former chairman of Tahirpur Upazila Parishad and a member of the Sunamganj District BNP Convening Committee, said he has been involved in grassroots politics for the past 17 years, fighting for people’s voting rights.

“I have always been on the streets with the people. If elected, I will work to transform this constituency into a center of industry and tourism while completing the unfinished development work,” he said.

Regarding election conduct, Kamrul said he is strictly following the election code of conduct and has instructed party leaders and activists to do the same.

“People are waiting for a free and fair election, and we are committed to ensuring that,” he added.

Commenting on the July Charter and  referendum, Kamrul said the democratic movement has opened the door for change and that BNP is campaigning for a ‘yes’ vote to restore people’s voting rights.

Expressing optimism about the election, he said young voters and common people are eager to vote without fear.

“Democratic struggle is my path. Politics, to me, is a means of serving the people and raising a strong voice against injustice,” he said.

The Sunamganj-1 constituency has a total of 501,555 voters, including 256,185 male voters, 245,360 female voters and 10 third-gender voters.

Alongside Kamrul, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Maulana Toyael Ahmed Khan and Nezame Islam Party candidate Maulana Mozzamil Haque are contesting the seat.

Election campaigning is in full swing across the haor-surrounded constituency, known for its natural beauty and resources.

The area includes internationally recognized Tanguar Haor, Shimul Garden—Asia’s largest shimul garden—Niladri Lake, Bareker Tila and several customs stations, sand and stone quarries that contribute significant government revenue.

Political observers believe that with proper planning and infrastructure development, Sunamganj-1 holds strong potential for economic transformation, making the constituency one of the most closely watched seats in the upcoming national election.
