SUNAMGANJ, Feb 6, 2026 (BSS) – Barrister Anwar Hossain, an independent candidate for the Sunamganj-3 constituency in the upcoming 13th national election, has pledged to prioritize the development of education, communication, and women's rights.
Barrister Anwar, a lawyer by profession and a former student of Dhaka University, has been involved in politics since his student days.
In an exclusive interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), he shared his vision for the constituency, which comprises the Jagannathpur and Shantiganj upazilas.
BSS: What are your promises to the voters of your area?
Barrister Anwar: I have many dreams for the Sunamganj-3 constituency. I intend to work on education, communication, medical services, and the development of women.
If elected, I will focus on improving crop protection embankments in the Haors for the benefit of our farmers. I want to bring innovation to every sector.
Furthermore, I plan to provide two ambulances through my own initiative, even if they are not provided by the government.
BSS: What instructions have you given to your leaders and activists regarding the electoral code of conduct?
Barrister Anwar: It is mandatory to follow the regulations set by the Election Commission. I have instructed all my leaders and activists to adhere strictly to local electoral rules to ensure no violence occurs. So far, there have been no violations of the code of conduct in our campaign.
BSS: What is your stance on the referendum regarding the "July Charter"?
Barrister Anwar: I am in favour of this charter. I have instructed my party activists to vote 'Yes' in the referendum. I believe this charter will be instrumental in building a 'New Bangladesh'.
BSS: What are your expectations regarding the upcoming national election?
Barrister Anwar: My expectations are very high—beyond what many can imagine. I will detail these in my manifesto. This constituency will belong to the people, and I will work alongside distinguished individuals from all classes and professions in the area.
The Sunamganj-3 (Jagannathpur-Shantiganj) seat is notable for its large expatriate population, which has contributed to a festive and vibrant electoral atmosphere. According to the District Election Office, the constituency has a total of 3,72,711 voters.
In Jagannathpur upazila, there are 1,51,389 voters (75,258 men and 76,131 women). In Shantiganj upazila, the total number of voters is 1,54,100, including 78,614 men, 75,484 women, and two third-gender voters.
Local residents are hopeful for a festive and peaceful election on February 12.
