BARGUNA, Feb 6, 2026 (BSS) - Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Barguna-2 constituency and central Majlis-e-Shura member Dr Sultan Ahmed has pledged to work for the development of health, education and river erosion control in the area if elected in the upcoming national parliamentary election.
Dr Sultan Ahmed said he would give priority to building a corruption- and terrorism-free society and address employment opportunities for both men and women.
He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with the Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha’s (BSS) Barguna district correspondent Md Hafizur Rahman ahead of the 13th National Parliament Election.
Dr Sultan Ahmed is contesting the election from Barguna-2 constituency, comprising Bamna, Patharghata and Betagi upazilas, with the Jamaat-e-Islami election symbol 'Dari Palla' (weighing scale).
He is a central Majlis-e-Shura member of Jamaat-e-Islami. During his student life, he was involved in politics with Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Later, he served as the Naib-e-Ameer (Vice President) of Jamaat-e-Islami in Barguna district. Over the past 16 years, he was imprisoned four times in political cases.
BSS: What are your electoral pledges to the voters of your constituency?
Sultan Ahmed: This election will be a unique one, as it is expected to be held in a free, fair and inclusive manner with the participation of all political parties.
People at home and abroad are hopeful that a transparent and credible election will take place.
The goal of the July revolution was to build a society free from corruption and terrorism.
As an individual, I am committed to honesty and accountability.
Insha Allah, I will work to meet the legitimate demands of the people, focusing on the development of health and education sectors, prevention of river erosion and addressing the problems faced by fishermen.
BSS: What instructions have you given to your leaders and activists regarding compliance with the election code of conduct?
Sultan Ahmed: We are a peace-loving party and remain committed to peace.
I have instructed my leaders and activists not to engage in any form of hostility or vindictiveness in the name of political competition.
Our party workers are conducting their activities in strict compliance with the election laws and code of conduct.
BSS: What is your position on the referendum concerning the July Charter?
Sultan Ahmed: Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir played a leading role in the July revolution.
We support reforms in the upcoming election and therefore, we are in favor of voting 'Yes' in the referendum.
BSS: What are your expectations regarding the upcoming national parliamentary election?
Sultan Ahmed: A wave of public awakening for change is evident across the country.
In the 2008 election, I was nominated as a Jamaat candidate from this constituency but withdrew my candidature in the greater interest in favor of Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, who was ultimately not elected.
This time, however, the situation is different. Insha Allah, I am confident of victory.
The Barguna-2 parliamentary constituency comprises Patharghata, Bamna and Betagi upazilas.
Before 2008, Betagi upazila belonged to the Barguna-1 constituency, while Patharghata and Bamna formed Barguna-2.
Following the re-demarcation of parliamentary constituencies during the caretaker government in 2009, Betagi upazila was incorporated into Barguna-2.
The constituency consists of three upazilas and two municipalities.
Barguna, a southern coastal district adjacent to the Sundarbans, is bordered by rivers on three sides. As a result, river routes remain the primary mode of communication for most upazilas in the district, with the exception of Betagi upazila.
According to the Election Commission, Barguna-2 has a total of 3,34,804 voters, including 1,66,304 male and 1,68,496 female voters. There are 122 polling centres in the constituency.
A total of nine candidates are contesting the Barguna-2 seat in the upcoming national parliamentary election. They are BNP Vice Chairman and former Member of Parliament from Barguna-2 Nurul Islam Moni ('Sheaf of Paddy' symbol); Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr Sultan Ahmed ('Dari Palla'); Islami Andolon Bangladesh candidate Mufti Mizanur Rahman Qasemi (Hat Pakha); Jatiya Party candidate Abdul Latif Farazi (Plough); National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Md Solaiman ('Am' or 'Mango' symbol); Bangladesh Jatiya Party candidate Kamruzzaman Liton ('Kathal' or 'Jackfruit' symbol); Bangladesh Congress candidate Sabbir Ahmed ('Dab' or 'Coconut' symbol); Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM) candidate Syed Md Najes Afroz ('Singho' or 'Lion' symbol) and independent candidate Mohammad Rashed Uzzaman ('Jahaj' or 'Ship' symbol).
