Narayanganj-4 Left Democratic Alliance candidate vows to uphold spirit of Liberation War

NARAYANGANJ, Feb 1, 2026 (BSS) –Left Democratic Alliance candidate for Narayanganj-4 (Sadar) constituency Selim Mahmud has said he aims to establish a discrimination-free society by nurturing the spirit of Liberation War. 

In an interview with Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), Selim Mahmud said he wants to create space for common people to speak and to put an end to the so-called ‘godfather’ culture in the constituency. 

Outlining his election pledges, Selim Mahmud said he would try to realise the spirit of the Liberation War and ensure people’s basic needs, including food, clothing, housing, healthcare, education, security. He said he wants represent the voices of working people and labourers in parliament.

He said his aim is to build a society based on equality and equity, free from discrimination, noting that the July student–people movement was held to establish such a society.

Regarding compliance with the election code of conduct, Selim said he and his supporters would not do anything beyond Election Commission’s directives.

Asked about the referendum on implementing July Charter, he said his party believes that an election should be held first and that the elected government should later take necessary measures regarding this issue.

Expressing his expectations for the upcoming national election, he said, “People had been deceived in past elections despite casting their votes.”

He stressed the need for a level playing field where equal opportunities and uniform rules will be ensured for all parties and candidates. 

Selim added that voters should be able to vote freely, without the influence of money, muscle power or communal forces, saying that implementation of these conditions would increase the possibility of a fair election.

Besides the BASAD candidate, a total of 14 nomination papers were submitted in the constituency, of which 13 were declared valid.

Other candidates of the constituency include Monir Hossain Kasemi of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, a BNP-led alliance partner; Abdullah Al Amin, joint member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP) backed by the Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance; Mohammad Ali of Bangladesh Republican Party; independents Md Shah Alam and Mohammad Gias Uddin; Mufti Ismail Kawsar of Islami Andolan; Anwar Hossain of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish; Elias Ahmed of Khelafat Majlish; Md Sulaiman Dewan of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal; Salauddin Khoka Mollah of Jatiya Party; Arif Bhuiyan of Gano Odhikar Parishad; Iqbal Hossain of CPB; and Selim Ahmed of Bangladesh Supreme Party.

Narayanganj-4 parliamentary constituency comprises seven unions of Sadar upazila—Fatullah, Kutubpur, Baktabali, Kashipur, Enayetnagar, Gognagar and Alirtek.

The constituency has a total of 535,327 voters, including 270,017 men, 265,304 women and six third-gender voters, with 177 polling centres.
