LALMONIRHAT, Jan 27, 2026 (BSS) - Deepak Kumar Roy, candidate of the Gonosamhati Andolan for Lalmonirhat-3 (Sadar) constituency, has pledged to identify and eliminate long-standing deprivations faced by the people of the district if elected in the upcoming 13th national parliament election.

In an interview with BSS, Roy said Lalmonirhat has long remained a neglected and marginalized district, suffering from poverty, unemployment and lack of development.

“We want to identify the deprivations in which the people of Lalmonirhat live. We work to remove them for the welfare of the people,” he said.

Roy, a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Gonosamhati Andolan, alleged that discrimination in national budget allocations has deepened poverty in the northern region.

He promised to seek special budgetary allocations for Lalmonirhat and ensure their proper implementation.

Roy also emphasized the need for a national five-year development plan aimed at eradicating poverty and creating sustainable employment.

Criticizing former lawmakers, he said their failure to bring development had pushed local youth towards despair, drug abuse and social degradation.

“We want a complete change in the situation, including the lifestyle of the youth,” he added.

Regarding the electoral code of conduct, Roy said his party has instructed all leaders and activists to strictly follow election rules, including regulations on posters, leaflets and festoons.

On the issue of the July Charter referendum, Roy reiterated his party’s strong support for state reforms.

He said the objectives of the July uprising including the fall of autocracy and establishment of democratic governance, are reflected in the July Charter.

Stressing the need for a balance of power among state institutions, he said the referendum is essential for creating a humane, democratic and people-oriented Bangladesh, and urged voters to cast their votes freely.

About his expectations for the election, Roy said he wants a peaceful, violence-free and participatory poll.

The Lalmonirhat-3 constituency comprises nine unions of Sadar Upazila and Lalmonirhat Municipality, with a total of 307,970 voters. Of them, 154,163 are male, 153,805 female and two are third-gender voters.

The election will be conducted at 94 polling stations with 595 polling booths.

Apart from former Roy, other contenders in the constituency are BNP candidate and former deputy minister and National Executive Committee Organizing Secretary and District BNP President, Asadul Habib Dulu, Lalmonirhat District Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and former Chhatra Shibir leader Advocate Abu Taher, adviser to the chairman of the Jatiya Party, General Secretary of the Lalmonirhat District Branch Md.
