BUDAPEST, June 12, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Two traffic accidents involving a truck and a minibus from Moldova left eight foreign nationals dead early Friday in
western Hungary, officials said.
Both crashes happened early in the morning near the city of Gyor, on the M1 motorway.
Around 4:30 am (0230 GMT), a truck driven by a Turkish citizen collided with a construction vehicle, killing the truck driver at the scene, a Hungarian
police statement said.
Less than 45 minutes later, a Moldovan minibus carrying nine people crashed into the rear of a Ukrainian vehicle, "likely due to the resulting traffic
slowdown", the police said.
Seven of the people in the minivan died at the scene, and two were seriously injured.
"Both Moldovan and Romanian passports were found at the scene," announced the Moldovan foreign ministry in a press release.
It added the identities and nationalities of the victims have not yet been officially confirmed.
Moldova's President Maia Sandu sent condolences to those affected in a Facebook post.
"My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy," she wrote.
Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar also posted a message of condolence on Facebook.
"On behalf of the government, I would like to express my sincere condolences to the families of the eight foreign nationals who lost their lives in the accident", he said.
