BOGOTÁ, May 20, 2026 (AFP) - The motorcade of a Colombian senator came under fire Tuesday by rebels of the now-defunct FARC guerrilla group in a conflict-ridden region of the country, President Gustavo Petro said.

Amid heightened security, ruling party Senator Alexander Lopez was traveling in a car ahead of his normal vehicle, which was hit with gunfire on a highway in Cauca.

"Senator Alexander Lopez's armored car was raked with gunfire by the drug-trafficking armed group led by Ivan Mordisco," the leftist Petro posted on X, adding that the vehicle of a local mayor was also attacked.
