Drone, 'probably Ukrainian' crashed in Lithuania: officials

VILNIUS, May 18, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Officials in Lithuania said Sunday that a drone, probably Ukranian, had crashed on its territory without exploding, near the eastern city of Utena.

Vilmantas Vitkauskas, head of the country's crisis management centre, told journalists the drone was "very probably" Ukrainian and that no one had been hurt.

Several drones have crashed inside the three Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia -- some Russian and some Ukrainian -- since Russia launched its full-scale of Ukraine in 2022.

The crash of two Ukrainian drones in neighbouring Latvia earlier this month led to the resignation of the country's defence minister and then the fall on the government last Thursday.

Ukraine is targeting Russia in the gulf of Finland, particularly ports and refineries, to limit Moscow's ability to wage war.

But mechanical defects or Russian jamming sometimes send Ukrainian drones off course and crashing into the territory of its Baltic allies.
