Peru to reopen some polls Monday after election blunder

LIMA, April 13, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - Peru's election authority said it will reopen some polling stations on Monday after logistical failures prevented tens of thousands of people from voting in presidential and legislative elections.

Logistical problems kept more than a dozen polling stations closed on Sunday, the National Office of Electoral Processes said.

Amid claims of fraud, election authorities said the extension was needed to protect voters' right to vote.

About 63,000 people were unable to vote due to a lack of ballots, ballot boxes and other voting materials.

National Elections Board General Secretary Yessica Elisa Clavijo Chipoco said some polling centers would be open until 6:00pm on Monday.

The authority did not say how many polling stations would reopen, but that it applied to those polling place where citizens were unable to exercise their right to vote on April 12.
