Portugal's far right wins first mayoral seats in local elections

LISBON, Oct 13, 2025 (BSS/AFP) - Portugal's far-right Chega party won its first mayoral seats in Sunday's local elections, capturing at least two town halls in small municipalities, according to official results.

Chega, which means "Enough", captured mayoralties in Sao Vicente, on the island of Madeira, and in Entroncamento in the central region.

The party won second place in snap elections in May, making it the official opposition party in the country just six years after its creation.

"This is a great victory for Chega, which is becoming a party with a municipal base" as it continues its "expansion", said founder and leader Andre Ventura.

In the last municipal elections in 2021, Chega won 4.2 percent of the vote but did not capture any town halls.

Exit polls for Sunday's vote published by local media showed the races in the capital Lisbon and Porto, the country's second city, as too close to call.
