AI-generated images falsely used to claim real-life extortion incidents:  BanglaFact

DHAKA, Feb 27, 2026 (BSS) - BanglaFact, the specialized Fact Check, Media
Research, and Analysis Team of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), has
exposed a malicious disinformation campaign utilizing Artificial Intelligence
(AI) to manufacture deceptive visuals of extortion and vandalism.

In an official briefing on Thursday, the unit revealed that high-tech digital
fabrications are being strategically deployed to mislead the populace and
compromise the integrity of the national information landscape.

The PIB investigative team identified a specific instance of disinformation
recently circulating on Facebook, which weaponized a manufactured narrative
of petty extortion to incite public outcry.

The viral post centered on a claim that a local business was destroyed over a
negligible sum: "A shop has been vandalized because an extortion demand of
only Taka 10 was not met."

Upon rigorous forensic verification, BanglaFact confirmed that the
accompanying image was not a photograph of a real-world occurrence.

Instead, the visual evidence was synthesized using Artificial Intelligence
and presented as a factual event.

This digital fabrication represents a calculated attempt to sow confusion
among the general public by passing off AI-generated content as authentic
truth.
