NARSINGDI, Sept 11, 2026 (BSS) - Four people including a woman went missing after drowning in the Shitalakshya River in Shibpur upazila of Narsingdi this afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 4:30pm in the river near Lakhpur village under Dulalpur Union.

The missing persons were identified as Md Obaidullah, 38, son of Billal Hossain of Bhangal village under Kaliganj Police Station in Gazipur; Mosa Shanta, 16, of Phulbaria village under Kapasia Police Station; Md Shanto, 24, son of Juel of Tangail Sadar upazila and Sourav, 20, son of Majnu Mia of Shibpur.

Police, Fire Service officials and local residents said Obaidullah, Shanta and Shanto had come to visit the house of Majnu Mia at Lakhpur village. In the afternoon, they went to the river to bathe with members of the household.

The three were swept away by the strong current as they reportedly did not know how to swim. Sourav, a relative, also went missing after attempting to rescue them.

Local residents initially searched for the victims but could not locate them. A team from Shibpur Fire Service later launched a rescue operation, which continued until 5:30pm.

The operation was suspended for the night due to the strong current and will resume on Saturday morning with the help of a diving team from Bhairab, Shibpur Fire Service Leader Islam Khan said.

Shibpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Kohinur Mia said police visited the scene after receiving the information. The identities and addresses of all four missing persons have been confirmed, he added.
