CHANDPUR, Sept 8, 2026 (BSS) - Police have arrested four more alleged members of an online fraud gang accused of duping people through fake advertisements for hilsa fish and various other products, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to six.

The latest arrests were made in Kalia upazila of Narail following a joint investigation by the LIC branch and Detective Branch of Chandpur District Police with technological support, said a police press release today.

Police recovered 10 mobile phones, 46 SIM cards, including two Indian SIM cards, and Tk75,000 in cash from the arrested persons.

According to police, the gang operated fake Facebook pages and WhatsApp accounts to promote hilsa fish, furniture, shoes, baby toys and online jobs through attractive offers and boosted advertisements.

They allegedly used edited videos and photographs, along with fake customer comments and reviews, to attract customers.

The suspects also allegedly used SIM cards registered in other people's names and posed as businessmen using fake identities, police said.

They reportedly used forged addresses, national identity cards, trade licences and vouchers to gain customers' confidence before taking payments without delivering the promised products.

Two cases have been filed with Chandpur Model Police Station under the Cyber Security Act, 2026, and relevant sections of the Penal Code in connection with criminal breach of trust and cheating.
