KHULNA, Sept 2, 2026 (BSS) - A passenger trawler capsized after colliding head-on with a ferry in the Bhairab River near Jailkhana Ghat in Khulna city on Tuesday night, leaving a youth missing.
The missing person was identified as Rakib Khan, 28, son of late Baker Khan of Sener Bazar in Rupsha upazila of Khulna.
According to local sources and River Police, the accident occurred at around 9:45 pm when the trawler, carrying around 30 to 35 passengers, was heading towards Sener Bazar from Jailkhana Ghat.
At the same time, a ferry carrying passengers and goods was approaching Jailkhana Ghat from the opposite direction. The two vessels collided head-on in the middle of the river, causing the trawler to sink.
Local boatmen rushed to the spot and rescued all the passengers except Rakib, who went missing in the river.
On receiving the information, teams from the River Police, Fire Service and Civil Defence and Coast Guard rushed to the scene and launched a search operation.
Abul Khair, officer-in-charge of Rupsha River Police Outpost, said the search for Rakib continued until 10:45 am today, but he could not be located.
Divers from the River Police, Fire Service and Coast Guard were conducting the search operation, he added.
