KHULNA, Aug 19, 2026 (BSS) - Although massive crash programmes were taken by
the District and Upazila Administrations, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) and
various social, political and volunteer organisations, the dengue situation
in Khulna has taken a serious turn as four patients died in the last five
days amid a steady rise in infections and hospital admissions.
A dengue patient died while undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College
and Hospital (KMCH) in the past 24 hours while three others died earlier
during the five-day period, health officials said.
With the latest death, the total number of dengue fatalities in Khulna
Division this year has risen to 14, including 13 in Khulna district alone.
According to the office of the divisional director of health, 135 new dengue
patients were admitted to different hospitals in the division during the past
24 hours.
Of them, 113 were admitted to government hospitals and 22 to private
hospitals.
Since January 1, a total of 3,690 dengue patients have been hospitalised in
the division while 3,162 have recovered and been discharged.
Currently, 476 patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals while
38 others have been referred elsewhere for advanced treatment.
Khulna recorded the highest number of new admissions with 53, including 27 at
KMCH.
Talking to BSS, Khulna Divisional Director of Health Dr Sheikh Md Mosharraf
Hossain said that one dengue patient died at KMCH in the past 24 hours.
Another patient died in Khulna on Monday, while two died on August 14.
He said 11 of the 13 dengue deaths in Khulna district occurred at KMCH, while
one death was reported in Bagerhat district.
In the past 24 hours, 80 dengue patients were admitted to different hospitals
in Khulna district, including 27 at KMCH.
Currently, 125 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at the medical
college hospital while another 187 are admitted to other hospitals in the
district.
KMCH Superintendent Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman told BSS that the hospital was
witnessing an increasing pressure of dengue patients every day.
Meanwhile, Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has intensified mosquito control and
public awareness campaigns as dengue infections continue to rise across the
city.
According to the KCC data, Ward No. 30 has recorded the highest number of
dengue patients with 111 cases, followed by Ward No. 29 with 100 cases while
Ward No. 28, identified as a red zone, recorded 80 cases and Ward No. 22
reported 77 cases.
KCC has divided the city's wards into different risk zones and launched
intensified mosquito control operations using fogging machines, hand sprays
and wheelbarrow fogging machines.
Mobile courts have also been conducting drives since Saturday to destroy
mosquito breeding grounds and remove stagnant water from residential and
commercial premises.
Talking to BSS, KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju said the authorities had
taken extensive measures to prevent the spread of dengue and warned that the
outbreak might continue for another two to three months.
He urged city residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean, remove
stagnant water and remain protected from mosquito bites, particularly during
daytime.
He urged city dwellers to keep clean their rooftop, house premises and open
spaces regularly to destroy aedes larvae otherwise house owners will face
ongoing mobile court.
Talking to BSS, Dr Sujat Ahmed, deputy director of KMCH, said people should
regularly clean their house, office premises and open spaces specially
vehicles tyres, green coconut husks where rain water is dumped.
He also urged the authority concerned and city dwellers to regularly clean
drainages and others open ditch for destroying mosquito larvae.
