RAJSHAHI, Aug 16, 2026 (BSS) - Tree saplings were distributed among students and members of the Hijra community in Nowhata of Paba upazila today to promote environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.

The programme was organised by cultural organisation 'Banchar Asha' to increase greenery and help maintain ecological balance.

Paba Upazila Social Services Officer Hossain Ali attended the programme as the chief guest, while the organisation's President Mostafa Sarkar Bijli presided. 

Nowhata Municipal BNP President Rafiqul Islam Rafiq inaugurated the event.

Speaking at the programme, Hossain Ali said tree plantation is essential for maintaining environmental balance. He urged people, particularly children and adolescents, to develop the habit of planting and caring for trees to help ensure a greener and more liveable environment for future generations.

He also called on people from all sections of society to participate in tree plantation and conservation efforts.

Among others, the organisation's Chief Adviser Kazi Nazmul Islam, Adviser Mahbubur Rahman Dulal, journalist Jahid Hasan Palash and Social Services Office staff member Rabiul Islam attended the event.

Saplings of mango, hog plum, jackfruit and other fruit trees were distributed among school students and members of the Hijra community.

The organisers said the programme aimed not only to distribute saplings but also to encourage beneficiaries to nurture and protect the trees.

Speakers stressed increased tree plantation to combat climate change, reduce air pollution and protect biodiversity, urging everyone to take responsibility for ensuring the saplings grow properly.
