CHANDPUR, Aug 10, 2026 (BSS) - A cement-laden trawler sank after being caught in a powerful whirlpool in the Meghna River near Chandpur River Port on Monday, with all four people on board rescued safely.
The incident occurred around noon at the confluence of three rivers near Boro Station Molehead.
The trawler, HM Transport, was carrying 440 sacks of Shah Cement when it sank. Local fishermen using boats and trawlers rescued the four crew members.
Trawler owner Hanif Bepari fears losses of nearly Tk 1 crore, including the vessel and the cement. The trawler was being operated by helmsman Ayub Ali.
Azmir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Naval Police Station, said naval police visited the spot after receiving information about the incident.
He said the trawler and its cargo had sunk in the river, while all four people on board were rescued and remained in Chandpur until Monday afternoon.
No complaint had been filed over the incident as of Monday afternoon, he added.
