RAJSHAHI, Aug 3, 2026 (BSS)- Varendra University organised a unique 
environmental awareness programme distributing tree saplings in exchange for 
used plastic. 

In this small initiative lies a big commitment - to reduce plastic and build 
a greener world.

With the aim of protecting the environment, reducing plastic pollution, and 
building a green and sustainable campus, an environmental awareness programme 
titled 'Trees in Exchange for Plastic' was held today at the university's 
Plaza premises.
 
Organised by the Department of Journalism, Communication and Media Studies, 
the programme ran from 10am to 12pm. Its main message was - 'Small Change, 
Big Impact'.

Through this programme, students got the opportunity to apply their academic 
knowledge in practice. The organising students said that plastic waste is a 
long-term threat to the environment, biodiversity and public health.
 
The Vice-Chancellor of the University Professor Dr. Khademul Islam Molla 
inaugurated the programme by releasing white doves.
 
Also present were the Executive Director of the University, Shamim Ahsan 
Parvez, Deputy Director of the Planning and Development Department, Sirajur 
Rahman, and teachers from different departments.
 
The most unique aspect of the programme was the distribution of tree saplings 
in exchange for plastic. Students, teachers, and staff members submitted used 
plastic bottles, packets and other materials and collected a tree sapling 
each.
 
A total of 300 tree saplings were distributed among the first 300 
participants. In addition, about 30 trees of various species were planted at 
different locations on the university campus.
 
About 400 teachers, students, and officers-employees participated in the 
entire programme. The collected plastic materials were preserved for 
recycling.
 
At the same time, participants were made aware of the importance of caring 
for trees, reducing the use of plastic, and living an eco-friendly life.
Through this programme, a call was made to reduce plastic waste, encourage 
tree plantation, increase awareness about the effects of climate change, and 
for the active participation of youth in sustainable development.
 
The organisers expressed hope that such initiatives will play an important 
role not only in keeping the campus clean and green, but also in awakening 
the sense of responsibility of individuals and society in protecting the 
environment.
