KHULNA, May 12, 2026 (BSS) - A cattle farm in Khulna city has introduced an initiative to sell sacrificial animals by live weight ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
The initiative has been taken by Pfizer Dairy Farm, located in the Teligati area under Aronghata Police Station in Khulna city.
According to farm authorities, fully local and Shahiwal breed cattle are being sold at Tk 500 per kilogram, while Jersey breed cattle are priced at Tk 450 per kilogram.
The price of each animal is being determined after measuring its full body weight on a scale.
Customers can book their preferred cattle by paying an advance of Tk 20,000, farm authorities said.
The farm also offers free home delivery after full payment, according to the buyers’ preferences.
Many people are showing interest in purchasing cattle by weight, and buyers from different parts of the city and adjacent areas are visiting the farm every day in search of suitable sacrificial animals.
So far, bookings for 21 cattle have already been completed.
Samiul Haque, a businessman and buyer from the Khalishpur area of Khulna city, who visited the farm, said all the cattle appeared healthy and attractive.
“The cattle are very beautiful and large in size. Ordinary buyers may find them difficult to afford. The price of Tk 450 per kilogram seems a bit high for us. It would be better if the price were lower,” he said.
Sources said the farm owner purchases selected healthy and comparatively young cattle from different districts for fattening ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. The animals are then reared carefully for one to three years.
The cattle are fed organic food prepared from fresh grass grown on the embankments of the owner’s shrimp enclosures, along with maize powder-based silage stored in drums. Bran is also provided regularly according to a feeding schedule throughout the year.
The farm currently has 103 sale-ready cattle, including 25 indigenous breed cattle, 25 Jersey breed cattle and 53 Shahiwal breed cattle. Their weights range from 300 kilograms to 1,068 kilograms.
Farm owner Mostafizur Rahman told BSS that he has been operating the farm for the last eight years.
“The farm’s biggest bull is named ‘Lal Bahadur’. It weighs 1,068 kilograms and has a bright red colour. A businessman has already booked it,” he said.
He added that another bull named “Tiger”, weighing around 950 kilograms, has also drawn attention because of its tiger-like appearance despite being calm in nature.
Rahman said cattle had also been sold by weight in previous years.
“The cattle will be sold according to their actual weight measured on a scale. An advance payment of Tk 20,000 is required to book each animal. Delivery will be made whenever the customer wants after full payment,” he added.
Expressing optimism over sales this Eid season, he said, “We hope to sell all the cattle.
“The daily maintenance cost for each animal is around Tk 350. The profit margin is not huge, but this profession carries love, sacrifice, joy and satisfaction. Caring for these silent animals and seeing them respond to you is a wonderful feeling.”
