KHULNA, April 9, 2026 (BSS) - A delegation of the Environment Committee of the German Parliament, currently visiting Khulna as part of its Bangladesh tour, today met officials of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) at a city hotel.

KCC Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju led the city corporation officials, while Deputy Chairman of the Environment Committee and team leader Michael Thews led the German delegation.

Welcoming the delegation on behalf of the city residents, the KCC administrator described the visit as timely and significant.

He said Khulna is one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in the country, facing major challenges such as rising sea levels, salinity intrusion, and frequent natural disasters.

Addressing these challenges requires inclusive and sustainable solutions, he added.

Expressing gratitude for Germany's continued support, he said KCC has been working with various German government agencies since 2010, implementing several development projects.

He urged the delegation to continue this cooperation in the future.

At the meeting, KCC sought further assistance from the German government in areas including climate-resilient infrastructure development, nature-based solutions, improved drainage and water management, sustainable waste management, and inclusive urban planning.

Other members of the delegation included MPs Sascha van Beek, Manuel Krauthausen, Dr Franziska Kersten, Julia Schneider and Violeta Bulc. Also present were Policy Officer Eleftherios Aslanidis, German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Achim Tr”ster, Deputy Head of Development Cooperation Janis Hussain, and Adviser Sheikh Mahmudul Ahsan.

Among others present at the meeting were KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed, Chief Engineer Moshiuzzaman Khan, Chief Planning Officer Abir Ul Jabbar, and Professor Dr Md Zakir Hossain of the Urban and Rural Planning Discipline at Khulna University, who moderated the session.

The delegation has been visiting Bangladesh since April 7, aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of climate change challenges in urban areas.
