KUSHTIA, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife in Sadar upazila here in 2020.
District and Sessions Judge Md. Enayet Kabir Sarkar pronounced the verdict at 12:00 noon in a packed courtroom.
The convict, Abdul Awal, 42, was also fined Taka 50,000, with an additional one-year jail term in default of payment.
Abdul Awal, son of Abdul Karim Biswas, hails from Harinarayanpur Kundupara village in Sadar upazila.
According to case details, the incident occurred on January 29, 2020, around 8:00 am. Following a dispute over alleged extramarital affairs, Abdul Awal attacked his wife, Shahana Khatun (also known as Jahanara Khatun), with a sharp weapon at their residence. She died on the spot from her injuries. The couple had three children.
During the attack, Awal’s mother was also injured when she attempted to intervene. Local residents rushed to the scene after hearing screams, apprehended the accused, and informed police.
Police from Islamic University Police Station recovered the body and sent it for autopsy before taking the accused into custody.
Later that day, the victim’s elder brother, Md. Shafiuddin, filed a murder case. Following an investigation, Sub-Inspector Shah Ali Mia submitted a charge sheet against Abdul Awal on March 3, 2020.
After years of witness testimonies and legal proceedings, the court found the charges proven beyond reasonable doubt, leading to the conviction and sentencing.
