BAGERHAT, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - A government initiative to boost jute production has begun in Mollahat upazila of the district, where 1,600 farmers are receiving free high-quality jute seeds.
The distribution program was officially inaugurated on Tuesday at Udaipur Union Parishad under the project titled “Advanced Technology Based Jute and Jute Seed Production and Expansion (2nd Revised)”, implemented by the Department of Jute under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute.
Organized jointly by the Upazila Administration and the local Jute Department, the initiative aims to enhance jute cultivation by providing farmers with improved seeds and promoting modern agricultural practices.
Speaking at the programme as the chief guest, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sumona Airin emphasized the importance of jute as a traditional cash crop.
“With the use of high-quality seeds and modern cultivation methods, it is possible to significantly increase jute production.
This will benefit farmers economically and contribute positively to the national economy,” she said.
She further added that the government’s initiative could help restore the past glory of jute, often referred to as the “golden fiber” of Bangladesh.
Udaypur Union Parishad Chairman SM Saikul Alam, along with local representatives and farmers, attended the event.
The program was conducted by Deputy Assistant Jute Development Officer Hafizur Rahman.
Officials said the seed distribution program will be expanded gradually to other unions in the upazila as part of the ongoing project.
