JAMALPUR, April 8, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced two persons to death and three others to life imprisonment in connection with a murder case stemming from a land dispute in Dewanganj upazila of the district in 2007.
The condemned convicts are Md Motaleb Hossain, 30, son of late Md Azizur Rahman and Md Rashid Jamal, 32, son of late Ain Uddin Fakir. Both are residents of Sabujpur village in Dewanganj upazila.
The three others—Md Abdul Latif, 38, Md Suruj Miah, 50, and Md Abdu Hamed, 28—were each awarded life term of rigorous imprisonment. All are sons of late Ain Uddin Fakir of the same area.
According to prosecution, the incident occurred on May 22, 2007, following a longstanding land dispute with Md Aktar Hossain, also known as Abedin. The accused allegedly lured Abedin to the Sabujpur Dakhil Madrasa ground under the pretext of a discussion.
During the meeting, they attacked him with knives, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed Abedin to the Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin, after examining seven prosecution witnesses and relevant documents delivered the verdict. The court also fined Taka 50,000 each of the convicted individuals.
Death-row convict Md Motaleb Hossain, who remains absconding, was not present in court during the pronouncement of the verdict.
Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Md Didarul Islam confirmed the judgment.
