RAJSHAHI, Jan 10, 2026 (BSS) – Community leaders today underscored the urgent need to promote rooftop-based renewable energy, saying wider use of solar power can significantly ease the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Renewable energy can be the effective means of lessening the pressure on fossil fuel in the country while ensuring sustainable and affordable energy for the future, they said at a community consultation with local leaders.

Paribartan, Bangladesh Working Group on Ecology and Development (BWGED) and Coastal Livelihood and Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) at SK Food World organized the event here.

Development activist Everest Hembrom and Paribartan Director Rashed Ibne Obayed addressed the function as focal persons with district unit president of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Kolpona Roy in the chair.

Director of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association Advocate Dil Sitara Chuni, journalists Golam Sarwar and Dulal Abdullah, development activists Hasibul Hassan, Golam Kibria and Alima Khatun Lima also spoke.

The speakers mentioned that reducing fossil fuel through promoting renewable energy can be a crucial means of protecting the environment.

Side by side with the financial burden on the economy, fossil fuel has detrimental impacts on the environment but renewable energies have no adverse impact on the economy and the environment as well.

Time has come to protect the natural resources including the wetlands and water bodies to restore the green atmosphere.

So, the institutions and research entities concerned should come forward and work together to promote the sector after the best uses of the existing resources and potentialities.
