SUNAMGANJ, Nov 17, 2025 (BSS) - Farmers of the district are celebrating a bumper yield of Aman paddy this season, thanks to favorable weather conditions.

Aman paddy, one of the main crops of the region, is being harvested in full swing, with farmers optimistic about the outcome despite previous challenges.

The district, which predominantly cultivates three types of paddy-- Aush, Aman, and Boro-- has witnessed particularly favorable conditions for Aman paddy this year.

While Aush is harvested at the beginning of the monsoon and Boro is harvested in summer, Aman paddy is traditionally sown during the monsoon and harvested in the fall.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) this year, a total of 82,656 hectares of land have been brought under Aman paddy cultivation, spanning Ufshi, hybrid and local varieties.

The district has set a target production of 216,997 metric tons of rice, with an estimated market value of over Taka 1,063 crore.

As of now, 11.5 percent of the total Aman paddy area, or around 10,000 hectares, have been harvested, with farmers working diligently to complete the process within the next 20 to 25 days, if the weather remains favorable.

Farmers across the district are reporting excellent yields, particularly from hybrid rice varieties, and are hopeful about a profitable season.

Abdul Alim, a farmer from Baraghat village in Sadar upazila, expressed his satisfaction, saying, "This time, the rice plants have grown very healthy. There were fewer insect infestations and pests. If we can collect the rice properly and get a fair price, it will be a great benefit for us."

Golam Mostafa, another farmer from Baraghat village, shared similar sentiments. "I planted hybrid rice this year, and the yield has been very good," he said. "The weather has also been favorable. I'm now starting to harvest, and I'm hopeful for a good return."

In Bishwambharpur upazila, Jewel Mia is experiencing a promising harvest as well. "This year, the yield has been better compared to previous seasons," he said.

Officials from the District Agricultural Extension Department attribute the successful harvest to the joint efforts of local farmers and government agencies.

Mohammad Omar Faruk, deputy director of the department, remarked, "The bumper Aman crop is the result of favorable weather and our continuous support for farmers, including training on high-yielding varieties, proper planting practices, and timely use of fertilizers and pesticides. Our field-level agricultural officers have been guiding farmers throughout the process."

District Administrator Dr. Mohammad Ilias Mia also highlighted the role of government initiatives in ensuring a successful harvest. "The good harvest of Aman this year is due to the timely interventions of the government," he said.

"We ensured that fertilizers and seeds were delivered to the farmers on time, and we will continue to support them in the harvesting and marketing processes."

As farmers in Sunamganj celebrate their success, there is an air of optimism in the district that this bumper harvest will contribute significantly to food security and the economic growth of the region.

With harvest season in full swing, the focus is now on ensuring fair prices for the rice and a smooth marketing process for farmers.
