RANGPUR, Nov 14, 2025 (BSS) - Health experts at a discussion today stressed the importance of awareness, disciplined living, healthier diets and regular exercise to prevent and control diabetes.

They spoke at a post-walkathon discussion organized by the Rangpur Diabetic Samity (RDS) at its conference room in observance of World Diabetes Day 2025. To mark the day, the RDS arranged a colorful walkathon, free diabetes testing and the discussion.

Former Principal of Rangpur Medical College, Professor Dr Md Abdur Rouf, attended the event as chief guest, with RDS General Secretary Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu in the chair. Senior Vice-President of RDS and freedom fighter Manjurul Islam also addressed the event.

Government officials, nurses from various medical colleges, RDS executive members and journalists were present.

Speakers noted that many people remain unaware of the serious risks posed by diabetes, often called a "silent killer," which gradually weakens the body's immune system and can lead to life-threatening complications.

Professor Rouf said the seriousness of diabetes depends on its type, making awareness and regular blood testing crucial. "People must know whether they have diabetes through routine tests," he said.

Explaining the disease, he noted that diabetes reduces insulin secretion, preventing glucose from reaching body cells. This raises blood sugar levels, causes frequent urination and leads to loss of glucose from the body. "As a result, cells cannot produce the energy they need, making patients feel weak. Without proper management, diabetes can lead to kidney, eye and heart complications," he added.

RDS General Secretary Mostafa Azad Chowdhury Babu said diabetes is preventable and manageable with proper lifestyle changes. "Many people with diabetes do not know they have it. Awareness is the key. By improving food habits and exercising regularly, diabetes can be controlled," he said.
