RANGPUR, Nov 13, 2025 (BSS) – Farmers have continued to sow groundnut seeds in full swing in the current Rabi season, aiming to produce a record 12,245 tonnes of winter groundnuts from 5,736 hectares of land in all five districts of Rangpur agricultural region.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has set the target of producing 12,245 tonnes of groundnuts for farmers of Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari of the agricultural region.

Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur region Krishibid Md Sirajul Islam told BSS that farmers have already sown groundnut seeds on 4,486 hectares of land as the process continues amidst excellent climatic conditions in the region.

Meanwhile, the tender groundnut plants are growing resplendently at this time both on the mainland and vast riverine char areas of the agricultural region in the Brahmaputra basin.

During the last Rabi season, farmers cultivated groundnuts on 5,679 hectares of land and produced 11,928 tonnes of the cash crop in the region.

“In addition, enthusiastic farmers produced 11,084 tonnes of groundnut by cultivating the crop on 5,227 hectares of land in Rangpur agricultural region during the just ended Kharif-1 season,” Krishibid Sirajul Islam said.

As a result of extensive motivational activities conducted by the DAE and other agri-related organisations, farmers are increasing cultivation of high-yielding varieties of groundnuts developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.

“With the continuous increase in demand for groundnut in the food industry and export of groundnut-product abroad, farmers are becoming interested in increasing its farming in mainland and pasture areas to gain more profits compared to other crops,” he said.

Groundnut trader Mokhlesur Rahman at Rangpur City Bazar said that farmers are selling their groundnuts produced in the last Khatif-1 season to wholesalers at rates between Taka 4,000 to 4,100 per mound (every 40 kg) to reap better profits now.

Deputy Director of the DAE's Burirhat Horticulture Centre in Rangpur Krishibid Dr Md Abu Sayem said that farmers, char and riverside people are expanding groundnut farming every year due to the low cost of cultivation and the profitable price in the local market.

"Farmers can earn up to Taka 80,000 by producing 22 to 28 mounds of groundnuts per acre of land twice a year, in the Rabi and Kharif-1 seasons, from the same land," he said.

Ordinary farmers and char and riverside rural people are gaining huge profits by expanding groundnut cultivation every year and improving their livelihoods and standard of living in recent years.

Talking to BSS, farmers Abdul Haque, Lokman Hossain and Saiduzzaman of Char Biswanath village in Kawnia upazila of Rangpur said they are cultivating groundnuts on one to two acres of land this year.

Farmer Yasin Ali of the same village said he has already sown groundnut seeds on one acre of sandy char land on the Teesta riverbed this season.

“In the last Rabi season, I harvested 28 mounds of groundnuts and sold the crop at Taka 4,100 per mound to reap a rewarding profit, excluding farming cost,” he added.

Similarly, farmer Saidul Islam of Char Gorokmandal village in Phulbari upazila of Kurigram said he has cultivated groundnuts on two acres of char land on the Dharla riverbed this time, like the last season.
