CHATTOGRAM, Nov 5, 2025 (BSS) – The Fisheries Department of Hathazari upazila today seized 2,500 meters of illegal nets and 25 fishing rods in a special drive conducted in the Halda River, the only natural fish breeding ground in South Asia.
The nets and fishing rods were seized during a raid conducted from Ramdas Munshirhat to the Haladar estuary of the North Mardasha Halda River in Hathazari, from early morning to 11 am.
Confirming the matter, Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer of Hathazari Md. Shawkat Ali said 2,500 meters of char-enclosed nets and 25 fishing rods were recovered during the drive.
The seized nets have been stored at the temporary naval police camp along the Halda River and will be destroyed later, the officer added.
Tofazzel Hossain also mentioned that continuous monitoring and drives are being carried out to protect the natural breeding grounds of carp fish in the Halda River, which is also home to dolphins and diverse aquatic biodiversity within the Bangabandhu Fisheries Heritage site.
