Man fined Tk 30,000, jailed for selling rotten meat in Satkhira

SATKHIRA, Nov 2, 2025 (BSS) - A man has been fined Taka 30,000 and sentenced to two months' imprisonment by a mobile court for selling rotten meat in the district town.

The convict, Abdul Kader, was arrested on Sunday morning with 30 kilograms of rotten meat while attempting to supply it to several hotels in the district town.

The operation was carried out at Laboni intersection with the assistance of the Satkhira Meat Traders' Association.

Later in the afternoon, a mobile court led by Executive Magistrate Md. Tajul Islam handed down the punishment under Section 45 of the Food Safety Act after the District Livestock Office confirmed that the seized meat was rotten and unfit for consumption. In default of the fine, Abdul Kader will serve an additional 20 days in jail.

Assistant Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection Mehedi Hasan, Safe Food Department Officer Dipankar Dutta, and District Livestock Veterinary Officer Dr. Biplob Jit Mandal were present during the operation.

Executive Magistrate Md. Tajul Islam said, "The accused was illegally transporting and supplying rotten meat to different hotels. The Livestock Department's report confirmed the meat was unfit for consumption. Legal action has been taken accordingly."

He added that law enforcement and intelligence agencies are investigating which hotels received meat from the accused and that monitoring has been intensified to prevent similar incidents in the future.
