Rare 'King Chada' found at Bay of Bengal

PATUAKHALI, Nov 2, 2025 (BSS) - A rare fish species, Longfin Batfish, locally known as 'King Chada', was found in the Bay of Bengal and is now being displayed at a local fish shop at Kuakata sea beach.

Tourists and locals gathered at the 'Mayer Doa Fish Fry' shop at 10am today to see the rare fish.

Shop owner Md Rabbi said, "This type of fish is not usually seen. I have brought this 4.75-kg fish from a fisherman at the local poura bazaar at a cost of Taka 950 per kg."

Kalapara Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said, the fish, scientifically identified as Platax teira, is also known as teira batfish, longfin batfish, longfin spadefish, or round-faced batfish. Local fishermen call it 'King Chada'. The species can grow up to 60 centimeters in length and is usually found in the Indo-West Pacific region.
