KHULNA, Oct 29, 2025 (BSS) - Experts at a workshop today emphasized the need for multifaceted initiatives to prevent child labour and exploitation resulting from climate-induced displacement.
They also highlighted the importance of building climate-resilient livelihoods, raising public awareness, and enhancing inter-agency collaboration.
The workshop, titled "Impact and Risks of Climate Change on Children in the Sundarbans Region," was held at Michael A. D Rozario Hall on Rupsha Strand Road.
Caritas Bangladesh, Khulna Region organized the event under the project "Climate-Induced Migration and Modern Slavery (CIMMS)," which is being implemented in Burigoalini Union of Shyamnagar Upazila in Satkhira.
Albino Nath, Regional Director of Caritas Khulna, presided over the workshop, while Md. Sadikul Islam, Director of the Department of Environment, Khulna Division, attended as the chief guest.
Addressing the participants, the chief guest said children's lives and safety are increasingly at risk due to climate change.
He urged stronger child protection measures and greater coordination among law enforcement agencies, the Department of Social Services, and development organizations.
Researchers from Caritas presented findings showing that climate change is driving children in the Sundarbans region toward school dropouts, child labour, unsafe migration, and debt bondage.
Women and adolescent girls were also reported to face heightened risks due to loss of livelihoods and extreme weather events.
Speakers at the workshop called for enhanced child protection, promotion of climate-resilient livelihoods, and coordinated efforts between government bodies and development organizations to safeguard vulnerable children in the region.
