CHATTOGRAM, Oct 24, 2025 (BSS) - The prices of winter and summer vegetables have dropped in several kitchen markets in the port city due to increased supply.

Over the last week, prices of vegetables have decreased by Tk 20 to 50 per kg. Additionally, the prices of broiler and Sonali chicken have also decreased by Tk 10 to 30 per kg in the markets.

This BSS correspondent visited kitchen markets at Bahaddarhat, Chawkbazar and Kazir Deuri Markets in the city on Friday and observed the development.

Traders expected further price drops in the coming days as the supply chain stabilizes. Although heavy rains earlier had severely disrupted vegetable transportation to Chattogram, recent rain breaks have boosted the supply to normalcy.

During visits to markets like Riazuddin Bazar and Chawkbazar, trucks and pickup vans were seen unloading a variety of vegetables on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning.

Iqbal Hossain, a warehouse owner at Riazuddin Bazar, noted vegetable prices have begun to fall as the supply has increased in the last few days. Abdul Alam, a shop owner, explained that the initial price hike was due to flooding during the monsoon, which damaged crops and reduced supply. However, with the rainfall stopping, supply is returning to normalcy, leading to price drops.

Md. Mohiuddin, a poultry seller at Chawkbazar Kacha Bazar, noted a decrease in prices of broiler chicken, beef, and mutton by Tk 10 to 30 per kg. Fish and most grocery items remain stable in price, according to local traders.

Nur Nobi, a vegetable seller at Bahaddarhat market, came up with the same observation that supply hike reduced vegetable prices.

He said compared to last week, vegetable prices have significantly dropped and are expected to decrease further as supply continues to rise. Consumers have also heaved a sigh of relief as vegetables worth Tk 60 to 80 per kg last week are now available at around Tk 50.

Abdul Mobin, a customer at Chawkbazar market, shared his experience of buying beans at Tk 140 last week and Tk 80 today. He mentioned that several vegetables are now priced below Tk 50 per kg.

Brinjal is being sold at Tk 60 to 70 per kg, white round brinjal and black round brinjal at Tk 60, cucumber at Tk 40 to 50, and bitter gourd and kankarol at Tk 60. Papaya is priced between Tk 20 and 30, radish at Tk 40, and pointed gourd (patal), chichinga (snake gourd), dhundal, and jhinga (ridge gourd) are all selling between Tk 40 to 50 per kg. Long beans (barbati) are priced between Tk 50 and 60, while taro stem (kachur lati) is selling at Tk 50, taro root (kachur mukhi) at Tk 60, and sweet pumpkin between Tk 30 and 35 per kg.
