LAXMIPUR, October 24, 2025 (BSS) - Fishermen in Laxmipur are preparing to fish in the Meghna River as the 22-day ban ends at midnight on October 25.

The ban, from October 4 to 25, aimed to protect mother Hilsa.

Laxmipur has 56,000 fishermen, of whom 52,000 are registered and 43,000 have fishing cards.

During the ban, over 200 mobile courts fined and jailed more than 50 fishermen. About 10 lakh meters of current nets, 10 boats, and 1,000 kg of Hilsa were seized.

The seized fish were distributed to orphanages, and the boats will be auctioned.

To support fishermen, 44,000 received 1,104 metric tons of VGF rice at 25 kg each.

The ban covered a 100 km stretch from Alexander in Ramgati to Shatanal in Chandpur.

District Fisheries Officer Md. Aminul Islam said the campaign was successful and predicted Hilsa production will rise to 23,000 metric tons - 500 MT more than last year.
