CHANDPUR, Oct 23, 2025 (BSS) – Mobile courts have arrested 87 fishermen and collected Tk 40,000 in fines for violating the fishing ban in the sanctuary area of the Padma-Meghna rivers in the district.
The District Fisheries Officer said that around 54 mobile courts conducted drives against illegal fishing from October 4 to October 22 and arrested 87 fishermen.
The mobile courts conducted 399 operations in the Padma-Meghna rivers and nearby areas, seizing 5,03,042 metres of nets and 1.06 tonnes of hilsa fish, he added.
Chandpur Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mirza Omar Faruk said that the government formed taskforces at district and upazila levels from the beginning of this year to protect mother hilsa in the sanctuary areas.
He stated that under the “Protection and Conservation of Fish Act, 1950,” hilsa fishing, transportation, storage, marketing, and sale are banned nationwide from October 4 to October 25 to protect mother hilsa during the peak breeding season.
