'Accurate statistics crucial for moving towards sustainable development'

RANGPUR, Oct 20, 2025 (BSS) - Acting Divisional Commissioner Md Abu Jafar has 
said that decisions should be made based on accurate and reliable statistics 
to move the country forward on the path of sustainable development.
 
"Importance of collecting accurate and reliable data is very important for 
policymaking and plan implementation," he said at a post-rally discussion 
held at the Deputy Commissioner's conference room in the city on Monday as 
the chief guest. 
 
The Divisional and District Statistics Offices in collaboration with the 
district administration organised the discussion after bringing out a rally 
on the city streets marking the World Statistics Day and National Statistics 
Day-2025.
 
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal presided over the discussion.
 
Deputy Director of Rangpur District Statistics Office Rajib Ghosh presented a 
documentary on the activities of various wings of Bangladesh Bureau of 
Statistics (BBS). 
 
Joint Director of Rangpur Divisional Statistics Office Md Shafiqul Islam and 
Associate Professor of Statistics Department of Begum Rokeya University 
Farzana Jannat delivered speeches as special guests at the event. 
 
The chief guest said that statistics are not just a numerical aggregate, but 
a reflection of the overall development, challenges and potential of a 
country. 
 
Highlighting the importance of statistics in the country's development and 
policymaking, he said that accurate statistics are very important in 
assessing the progress of plan implementation. 
 
He said that accurate subject-based statistics would play an effective role 
in achieving various SDG targets by 2030. 
 
Regarding the reliable and quality data collection process, he said that the 
more the data collection process and analysis improve, the more acceptable 
the published statistics will be. 
 
The Deputy Commissioner said that by observing the day, everyone should 
realize the importance of statistics in the national and international 
context. 
 
Referring to accurate statistics as a measure of development, he said that 
reliable statistics are essential for a planned economy. 
 
"It is not possible to formulate a country's development plan without 
accurate statistics. There is no alternative to statistics in policy-making, 
plan implementation and measuring the progress of various sectors," he said. 
 
He emphasized on adopting modern methods in data collection like in the 
developed world and regular updating of data.
