MUNSHIGANJ, Oct 20, 2025 (BSS) - A mobile court sentenced three fishermen to seven days' imprisonment and a total of 2,20,000 meters of illegal current nets were seized in separate drives in the Padma River for catching hilsa during the government-imposed fishing ban.
District administration sources said a team led by Additional District Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim conducted drives in various areas of the Padma River, including Mollar Char, Kishoreganj, Bakchar, Sardarkandi, Kalir Char and Banglabazar under Sadar upazila this morning.
During the drives, the team seized 1,20,000 meters of illegal current nets, which were later burned and destroyed.
District Fisheries Officer Golam Mehedi Hasan, Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk, Sadar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Abul Hashem, members of Bangladesh Coast Guard and police personnel assisted in the operation.
Earlier, in another drive in the Padma River under Louhajang upazila, a mobile court sentenced three more fishermen to seven days' imprisonment for the same offense.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Nesar Uddin led the operation, during which 1,00,000 meters of current nets were seized and later destroyed.
The convicted fishermen are Md Latif, son of Md Ibrahim, Sohrab Mia, son of Shamsuddin Madbar, and Shahjul Madbar, son of Salam Madbar - all residents of Louhajang upazila.
Senior Fisheries Officer of Louhajang Upazila Md Rezaul Islam, along with Coast Guard and police personnel, took part in the drive.
