50,000 metres illegal fishing nets, fish seized in Patuakhali

PATUAKHALI, Oct 12, 2025 (BSS) - As part of the "Mother Hilsa Conservation Drive 2025", the upazila administration of Rangabali conducted operations in different rivers and estuary of Bay of Bengal and seized about 50,000 metres of illegal fishing nets with fishes. 

The drives were carried out in the Agunmukha, Buragauranga, and Tetulia rivers, as well as in the estuary of the Bay of Bengal from 6am to 8pm on Saturday, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Rajib Das.

During the raids, various types of banned current nets and "behundi" nets, along with 20 kilograms of hilsa and poma fish were confiscated. 

The seized fish were later distributed free among orphans and poor people, while the 50,000 metres of nets, worth around Taka 15 lakh, were burnt in public.

Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard (South Zone, BCG Outpost) and officials from the Upazila Fisheries Office were present during the operation.
