‘Bangladesh achieves success in reducing dropout, illiteracy rate’

RANGPUR, Sept 8, 2025 (BSS) – Bangladesh has achieved commendable success in reducing illiteracy rates and student dropout rates through the implementation of various programmes towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
 
The opinion came today at a discussion jointly organized by the district administration and District Non-Formal Education Bureau at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room in observance of the International Literacy Day- 2025 in the city.
  
Government officials, teachers and students, NGO representatives, civil society members, religious leaders and journalists were present at the event.
 
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rabiul Faisal addressed the discussion as the chief guest with Assistant Director of Non-Formal Education Bureau Tanzila Akhter in the chair. 
 
Rangpur District Primary Education Officer Md Nazrul Islam, Chief Instructor of Rangpur Polytechnic Institute Shahida Binte Bari, among others, delivered speeches as special guests at the event. 
   
Tanzila Akhter discussed various government programmes taken to provide literacy knowledge, informal education, technical and vocational training to the illiterate population to turn them into skilled human resources. 
 
The speakers said the government has been implementing massive programmes to achieve cent percent literacy rate and the SDGs by 2030 on the way to build a developed nation by 2041 next.
 
They stressed proper implementation of the national education policy to build an illiteracy-free nation through spreading education among all. 
 
They put special emphasis on comprehensive GO-NGO collaboration to further accelerate the process of reducing illiteracy rate alongside providing job-oriented education to illiterate people to make them productive human resources. 
 
The chief guest said that in order to develop the country, there is no alternative to increasing literacy rate in addition to studying and acquiring digital literacy to keep pace with the times. 
 
Regarding child marriage, he said that child marriage is a big obstacle in achieving proper education. 
 
“Parents should be aware that the education of their children should not be interrupted in any way,” he said, and urged all concerned to prevent students from dropping out of school to achieve 100 percent literacy.
