LALMONIRHAT, August 10, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested the prime accused in connection with the brutal assault on a local journalist and his mother at Mokra Dhodhogachh village in Sadar upazila here in the district.

The incident took place on Saturday evening when Helal Hossain Kabir, 38, executive editor of the weekly newspaper Alormoni, was attacked by a group of miscreants while on his way to carry out professional duties. 

Kabir and his mother, who was also assaulted while trying to save her son, are currently undergoing treatment at Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

A case was filed with Sadar Police Station naming 11 accused. 

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nurnabi confirmed that police arrested the main accused, Sohrab Hossain, 45, son of Mokbul Hossain of the same village, late Saturday night. 

Efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects, and a charge sheet will be submitted to the court after the investigation, he added.

According to the complaint, 10-12 armed attackers grabbed Kabir on the road and beat him severely, allegedly over a previous dispute. 

They also looted Tk 17,300 from his pocket. When his mother rushed to protect him, she too was beaten and physically assaulted. Locals later rescued the injured mother and son and admitted them to hospital.
