Rangamati Fishermen's Association leader Md. Harunur Rashid told BSS that everyone involved in the fishing business is passing busy time due to the fishing in Kaptai Lake.
All the traders have completed their preparations for transporting fish, including drums and ice-breaking machines.
Fishermen are happy that work has started again after being unemployed for long. The traders expect that the fishing business will be good this time as there is plenty of water in the lake and the environmental conditions are conducive.
Although the three-month ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake from May 1 to July 31 expired, the ban was extended by two more days till August 2.
Every year, fishing in Kaptai Lake is closed for three months from May 1 to July 31 to ensure the natural reproduction of carp fish in the 725 square kilometres Kaptai Lake and also to ensure the proper growth of released fish fry. About 27,000 fishermen earn their living by fishing in this lake.
Every year, during the fishing ban in the lake, food assistance is provided to unemployed fishermen's families for three months through VGF.
