MAGURA, Aug 2, 2025 (BSS) - A discussion and prayer was held in Magura today to commemorate the historic "Roktakto-24" (Bloodied 24) uprising, regarded as a defining moment in the country's struggle for democracy.
The programme began at 11 am at the District Auditorium and was jointly organized by the Magura District branches of Zia Parishad and Sammilito Peshajibi Parishad.
Magura District BNP Convenor Ali Ahmed attended the event as chief guest, while Professor Dr. Alimuzzaman, Joint Secretary General of the Central Committee of Zia Parishad, presided over the session. Lecturer Shahjahan Mridha was present as special guest.
Speakers at the event paid tribute to those who laid down their lives during the uprising, emphasizing that "Roktakto-24" symbolized a courageous stand for restoring democracy in the country.
In his speech, chief guest Ali Ahmed said, "Under the leadership of President Ziaur Rahman, the foundation of democracy in Bangladesh was solidified. His vision, dedication and leadership gave the nation a new direction. He lives on in the hearts of the people."
He added, "This mass uprising reminds us to remain vigilant. The sacrifices made by the martyrs must never be forgotten."
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Alimuzzaman said, "The bloodshed during the mass movement must not be in vain. We hope the perpetrators of injustice and authoritarianism will be held accountable and that the nation will one day be free from the weight of this tragic history."
The event ended with a special prayer offered for the martyrs of the movement.
