Human chain demands protection from river erosion in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, July 7, 2025 (BSS) - A human chain was formed in Islampur upazila of the district on Sunday afternoon demanding effective protection from river erosion.

People from all walks of life, including leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its front organizations, joined the human chain held on the west bank of the Brahmaputra River at East Bahadurpur village under Palbandha union.

Speaking at the programme, Adviser to BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and former Cabinet Secretary ASM Abdul Halim said erosion by the Jamuna and Brahmaputra rivers has long been endangering lives and livelihoods in Islampur upazila.

He said many families have been rendered homeless and are leading inhumane lives after losing their houses and properties to river erosion.

He urged the government to take long-term and sustainable measures to prevent further erosion.
