Seeds, fertilizer, pesticides distributed to boost cotton production

JASHORE, July 5, 2025 (BSS) - The government today distributed seeds, fertilizer and pesticides among 2,600 farmers of the district as incentives to boost cotton production in the region.

The distribution ceremony was held at the training centre of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute at Khayertola area in the town where Additional Secretary of the research wing of the Agriculture Ministry Abu Jubair Hossain Babul was present as the chief guest.

After inaugurating the ceremony, the additional secretary said that the incentives worth about Taka 8,500 have been given to each of the farmers to encourage them in cotton cultivation.

The profit portion in cultivating cotton is much higher than the other crops though it takes some additional time, he said adding that a farmer can produce cotton worth about Taka 60,000 to 70,000 on one Bigha of land in a season. 

Chaired by the Executive Director of Bangladesh Cotton Development Board Rezaul Amin, the function was addressed, among others, by Deputy Director of the Board Tasdikur Rahman and Chief Cotton Development Officer Mizanur Rahman.

Abdul Alim, a farmer of Mohinikati village under Jhikorgachha upazila who came here to receive the incentives told BSS that last year he cultivated cotton on one Bigha of land for the first time and earned Taka 48,000. 

The yarn factory owners used to collect the produced cotton from the house of the farmers by representatives, Alim said adding that due to many facilities he has already decided to produce cotton on two Bighas of land this year.

Rabiul Islam, another farmer from the same village said that his profit from the cotton production was satisfactory in last year that is why he has decided to increase its production this year.
